Join the Catholic Community Foundation for a legacy planning webinar which will cover the basics of planning your legacy – what is a will and trust and how to know which you need, how to ensure your final wishes are carried out, how and why to include charitable gifts as part of your legacy, and more.
We are blessed to have Bishop Oscar Cantú join us to start this session with prayer and reflection on legacy.
Brandon Rebboah, Attorney in Berliner Cohen LLP’s Estate Planning Group, will cover the basics of wills, trusts, and estate planning.
Laura Schemmel, Outreach Manager at San Jose Catholic Cemeteries, will discuss considerations for funeral planning.
Nick Carney, Endowment and Legacy Program Manager at the Catholic Community Foundation, will examine how to leave a charitable legacy as part of your overall plans.

Event Speakers
Bishop Oscar Cantú
Bishop Oscar Cantú became the third Roman Catholic Bishop of San Jose on May 1st, 2019. Bishop Cantú has served on several committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), such as the Committee on Catholic Education, the Doctrine Committee, the Sub-Committee on Hispanic Affairs, and the Committee on International Justice and Peace. He chaired the Committee on International Justice and Peace and visited churches in some of the most troubled areas of the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia to represent the U.S. bishops in showing solidarity with the local churches. He was one of two delegates chosen by the bishops’ conference to represent the USCCB at Pope Francis’ visit to Mexico in February 2016.
Brandon L. Rebboah
Attorney, Berliner Cohen LLP
Brandon is an attorney in Berliner Cohen’s Estate Planning Group. Brandon counsels individuals and families on estate planning, estate administration, probate administration, and tax matters. Additionally, Brandon’s practice focuses on sophisticated wealth transfer strategies. He earned his B.A. from Santa Clara University, his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, and his LL.M. in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center. Brandon is a Bay Area native and graduate of Bellarmine College Preparatory. He is a dedicated advocate of Catholic education. He, his wife and son, reside in San Jose.
Laura Schemmel
Outreach Manager, Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Service (CFCS) San Jose
CFSC provides an experience of the Catholic faith during an end-of-life journey. Laura has enjoyed working for Catholic Cemeteries for the past 5 years. Her talents in administration and marketing have allowed her to lead a staff of faith-filled co-workers to develop Catholic Cemeteries workshops and events to educate the parishes as well as local communities and organizations throughout Santa Clara County. On a personal note, Laura understands grief due to the losses of a loved ones, both sudden and due to an illness. Due to this, she is an advocate of end-of-life planning. Laura believes that God has led her to the job she has today through the personal loss, job training, faith journey and talents bestowed upon her.
Nick Carney
Endowment and Legacy Program Manager, The Catholic Community Foundation
Nick Carney has served in his role with the Catholic Community Foundation as Endowment and Legacy Program Manager since 2019. His work focuses on supporting the long-term financial growth of Catholic ministries and being a resource for donors, focusing primarily on planned gifts. Before his work with the Catholic Community Foundation, Nick served the YMCA for 7 years overseeing community outreach programs and fundraising. Nick is also a certified agent working with families and individuals for financial coaching reviewing long term investment and life insurance options. Nick is also a graduate from Gonzaga University earning his masters in Organizational Leadership.
