The Catholic Community Foundation (the “Foundation” or “CCF”) is focused on strengthening our Catholic community through fund development and grant making. We are a partner in Catholic philanthropy, matching donor intent with unmet needs, and building “Forever Value” by acquiring and growing endowed funds. As a full-functioning community foundation, we are able to extend our outreach and effectiveness into the community by offering donor advised funds and legacy planning services, in addition to our professionally invested endowments.

Overview of Scope and Responsibilities

The Catholic Community Foundation seeks a CEO that will provide vision, strong leadership and strategic direction with the ability to continue to grow its resources and impact in the community while serving as an advocate of Catholic morals, ethics, and values. The new leader will report directly to the Board of Directors (the “Board”) and work closely with the Board to promote the image of, and increase public awareness and understanding of the work of CCF while also ensuring the Foundation’s work is supported by and consistent with the pastoral plan of the Diocese of San Jose.

The CEO is an active, visible leader for internal and external stakeholders and constituencies that works collaboratively with a high performing staff to implement strategic initiatives, set operational policies, and ensure effective and timely communication with the Board, Diocese, donors, beneficiaries and the community.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

Relationship Management & Fund Development

The Foundation connects generous people with impactful ministries and organizations. Unlike traditional fundraising, the development aspect of this role focuses on supporting beneficiary organizations through the development of endowments and investment funds and assisting families in the effective deployment of their charitable equity.

  • Fosters deep, meaningful relationships with current fund holders, advisors, beneficiaries, legacy donors, and ambassadors, ensuring consistent communication, stewardship, and engagement to foster long-term partnership and support.
  • Drives the strategic development of diverse family and institutional funds, including Donor Advised Funds, Endowments, and Agency Funds, ensuring effective deployment of family charitable equity and sustainable support for beneficiaries.
  • Provides philanthropic consultation and support, helping donors develop and implement effective giving plans, connecting donors with causes aligned with their values and guiding them in the creation of legacy giving plans.

Strategy and Planning

  • Works closely with the Board and staff to develop a vision and strategic direction which encompasses both long-term and short-term plans and performance measurements that will guide financial and operational decision-making while supporting the Diocese of San Jose Pastoral Plan.
  • Oversees the development, implementation and monitoring of the strategic plan and reviews the plan annually with the Board.
  • Creates a strategy for the Foundation’s overall fund development goals, taking into account granting goals and the appropriate mix of funds for the organization’s sustainability.
  • Reports quarterly progress on the plan to the Board and makes adjustments or recommendations to the Board when needed.

Leadership/Organizational Management

  • Ensures the continuation of the Foundation’s philosophies and values: open communication, relationship-building, collaboration, and donor and beneficiary-focused service.
  • Provides oversight of all aspects of the day-to-day operations with a focus on quality and service to all constituencies.
  • Attracts, motivates, develops and retains talented staff through providing individual professional learning and performance plans.
  • Engages external legal counsel, consultants and independent contractors when needed to achieve the Foundation’s goals.

Budget/Finance

  • Focuses on the alignment of resources to achieve strategic goals and oversees the development and implementation of the annual financial plan once it is approved by the Board.
  • Communicates the financial needs of the organization to the Board and works collaboratively with them to ensure the goals are met.
  • Ensures adequate internal controls are in place and compliance with funding guidelines and reporting guidelines are monitored.

Governance/ Board of Directors

  • Works with the Board to plan and coordinate their meetings.
  • Initiates the strategic planning process.
  • Serves as the liaison to the Board and its committees.
  • Keeps the Board updated regularly on the progress of the annual goals and objectives of the Foundation.

External Public Relations

  • Serves as the primary spokesperson for the Foundation and communicates awareness of the existing and changing needs of the Catholic community.
  • Promotes the Foundation and maintains constructive and open communication and relationships with all stakeholders.

Qualifications

The CEO must embrace the mission and values of the Foundation and have the ability to build trusting relationships with the Board, Diocese, donors, beneficiaries and external partners. It is also important for the new leader to initiate new ideas, and establish new relationships while ensuring existing relationships and operations continue to move forward effectively.

Experience

  • Successful track record of progressive years of senior management, financial, and/or fund-raising leadership in a complex corporate, academic and/or nonprofit setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and exceptional ability to clearly communicate vision and values, build trusting relationships with Board and external stakeholders, manage multiple priorities, and inspire and motivate staff.
  • Financial experience/knowledge that includes an understanding of investments, financial statements and wealth transfers along with new regulatory and compliance issues.
  • Experience working with consultative bodies, related organizations, and professional staff to include experience working proactively, and communicating effectively with, an active and committed Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated ability to build on existing momentum of an organization and continue its growth while concurrently increasing its visibility and respect.
  • Ability to develop and maintain successful, collaborative relationships when working with and through accountants, lawyers, financial advisors, and other key influencers.
