I have been blessed in my time as CEO of the Foundation and as a volunteer for local organizations to get to know many generous, faith-filled individuals who work to advance ministry and improve community. No one stands out to the extent of Lon Normandin.
Lon and Peg set the example of Catholic Philanthropy, although they never would have used those words. They developed a culture of giving in their family, with a focus on Catholic education and Catholic outreach. So many local Catholic schools have felt the loving touch of this family!
So, when Bishop McGrath needed someone to form and run the independent Catholic Foundation, he knew exactly who to ask (and who could never say “no” to the bishop). Thus, Lon became the founding board chair of the Catholic Foundation.
The Foundation was formed for the Rooted in Faith Capital Campaign, benefiting the Diocese of San José. When the campaign was wrapping up, the board and staff embarked on a planning process aimed at broadening the capabilities, offerings, and impact of the Foundation. Under the leadership of Lon and Ron Pelzel, we became the Catholic Community Foundation. Since inception, the Foundation has granted roughly $85 million to our local Diocese, Catholic organizations, and other worthy non-profits.
Under Lon’s leadership, we built a flexible organization that can be responsive to the changing needs and opportunities of our diverse community. Our “foundation” is firm, and the future of impactful grant making is bright, largely because of the vision and leadership of Lon.
We are grateful!
