2025 Capstone Advisor Session: Advising the Whole Family

2025 Capstone Advisor Session: Advising the Whole Family

On October 29, 2025, we held our signature Capstone Advisor Session. Advisors from around the Bay Area gathered to network, and to gain knowledge and tips on helping their clients advance effective philanthropy.

Our goal every year with this event is to add value to the work of attorneys, wealth managers, CPAs, insurance specialists and philanthropy advisors as they work with families on developing and executing philanthropic strategies.

The topic this year was: Advising the Whole Family, Rethinking Philanthropic Governance

We were pleased to have Matthew Wesley as our speaker. Matt’s firm, Ascend Family Advisory, works with families to build strategies and frameworks to last for generations. A key part of this is recognizing family “types,” and tailoring planning and construction around that. It was a fascinating presentation, followed by an engaging Q&A with Mary Quilici Aumack, our CEO Emerita.

Here are some kay takeaways:

  • Often plans are constructed with only the first generation participating. This poses a threat for plan resilience and sustainability.
  • Giving the inheritors an opportunity to “test drive” the intended structures in a small way while the first generation is still alive can provide valuable feedback for future planning.
  • By understanding critical family interconnections, communications, and collaboration practices, our plans can be tailored and set up for long-term success.

The event began with lively networking time. Attendees enjoyed making new connections and seeing old friends. This annual event is free to all attendees thanks to the support of our sponsors: Jordan Park, Berliner Cohen, Ferrari Ottoboni Caputo & Wunderling LLP, Frank, Rimmerman + Co., Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management, and RBC Wealth Management.

All of us who walk with families as they develop and execute their philanthropic plans have the great gift of being able to add value. Through listening, sharing ideas, and helping document and measure, we help families improve community, however they define community.  What a gift!
