Marketing & Communications Manager Job Description

Position Summary

The Marketing & Communications Manager develops, executes and manages marketing and communications efforts that advance the mission of the Foundation and deepen engagement with donors, advisors, beneficiary organizations and the broader Catholic community. This role is responsible for implementing clear, consistent, and compelling messaging that reflects our commitment to serving our community and building a strong culture of Catholic philanthropy.

Reporting to the Director of Engagement and Communications, and closely working with staff and key partners, this position helps ensure our marketing and communications are thoughtful, mission-aligned, and reflective of the impact we are privileged to support.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Content Development & Storytelling

  • Develop and produce compelling content that communicates the Foundation’s mission, impact, and values, including donor stories, newsletters, campaign materials, articles, and reports.
  • Translate complex philanthropic concepts (e.g., donor-advised funds, endowments, legacy gifts) into clear, accessible, and meaningful language.
  • Communicate the Foundation’s responsible and strategic management of charitable assets with integrity and a focus on long-term impact.

Communications Execution & Brand Management

  • Support the execution of the Foundation’s communications plan across email, website, print, and social media channels.
  • Maintain and update core marketing materials, including brochures, handouts, newsletters, and advertisements, ensuring consistency in voice, messaging, and brand standards.
  • Ensure all communications align with organizational messaging and visual identity guidelines.
  • Support cultivation of key audiences and stewardship efforts through strategic, thoughtful, and timely communications.

Digital & Email Communications

  • Manage website content updates, assist with writing/design of email marketing and manage social media presence.
  • Track baseline performance metrics (email, website, engagement) and recommend improvements to enhance reach and effectiveness.

Events & Foundation Visibility

  • Support promotion and communications for Foundation events, donor gatherings, and educational opportunities.
  • Assist in elevating awareness and participation in key initiatives and campaigns.

Project & Administrative Support

  • Manage timelines for communications projects and coordinate production of materials.
  • Perform other communications-related duties as assigned by the Director of Engagement & Communications.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field.
  • 3–6+ years of experience in communications and/or marketing
  • Familiarity with Catholic organizations or openness to working within a faith-based environment
  • Understanding of Catholic stewardship and philanthropy and a desire to serve and assist others
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • The ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Writing, Editing & Content Creation

  • Strong copywriting and editing skills for emails, articles, website, reports, newsletters, and marketing materials.
  • Ability to create clear, engaging, and persuasive content tailored to diverse audiences and communication channels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Email Marketing

  • Proficiency with email marketing platforms (e.g., Constant Contact or similar), including campaign creation, list segmentation, and performance tracking.
  • Understanding of audience targeting and effective calls-to-action.

Website & Digital Skills

  • Experience managing content within a CMS (e.g., WordPress), including updating text, images, and page layouts.
  • Familiarity with UI/UX best practices and SEO fundamentals.

Design & Marketing Materials

  • Proficiency with graphic design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop) and Canva.
  • Ability to design and format polished digital and print materials, with a strong sense of layout, typography, visual hierarchy, and branding consistency.

Project Management & Organization

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and coordinate timelines for production and distribution.
  • High attention to detail across writing, design, and content execution.

Communication, Adaptability & Initiative

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with others on the team and with diocesan and community partners.
  • Professional, mission-aligned approach to stakeholder engagement.
  • Creative mindset with the ability to generate fresh ideas for content, campaigns, and engagement.
  • Willingness to learn new platforms, tools, or processes as communications needs evolve.

 

Preference will be given to qualified candidates who also have the following:

  • Understanding of the parish structure and workings within the Diocese of San Jose
  • Experience in the development office of a philanthropic organization
  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS for light website updates or customization
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator
  • Experience working at a Foundation
  • Experience working with legal agreements
  • Experience working with CRM like Raiser’s Edge or similar database
